Who Makes Actos?
Actos is a Type 2 diabetes drug that was developed by Japanese pharmaceutical giant Takeda Pharmaceuticals. Takeda is a large, multinational company that employs over 19,000 people. Actos has been among the US’s top-selling pharmaceuticals since its release to the market in 1999, making Takeda $36.2 million in that year. Its sales topped $3.3 billion in 2010. However, Actos has been taken off the shelves in France and Germany after evidence surfaced that it increases a person’s risk of developing bladder cancer.
Despite the rigorous testing pharmaceutical products undergo before they can be released to the public, Actos’s dangers were not disclosed until after it became available for purchase. Allegations have surfaced that Takeda knew about these dangers before the drug was released.
