A U.S. District Judge has recently made the order to unseal a whistleblower case of the former medical reviewer for Takeda Pharmaceuticals involving the failure to report bladder cancer risks from the use of the popular Type 2 diabetes medication, Actos.
The whistleblower is a doctor and former safety reviewer for Takeda who worked to test the products for adverse side effects and look into potential safety hazards.
The report shows that this doctor knew of the bladder cancer risk associated with the medication, but faced “resistance from her superiors” when she tried to report these concerns. The adverse event database had over 100 cases of bladder cancer, but only 72 were reported to the Food and Drug Safety Administration. From late 2007 to 2010 cases of congestive heart failure were not classified.
