Posted on February 6th, 2012 No Comments

New research is now showing a link between diabetes and an increased risk of birth defects.

According to experts, pregnant women who have type 1 or 2 diabetes may have an increased risk that their infants will suffer from serious complications.

Women who suffer from diabetes have a 7 percent chance that their child will suffer from a birth defect compared to women who do not suffer from diabetes, who have a 2 percent risk. Birth defects such as cardiovascular defects, muscoskeleltal defects and nervous system¬† defects were seen to be four times more¬† likely to occur in children whose mother’s suffer from diabetes.

Diabetes is serious condition that can change the life of those affected by it. There are many different treatments for diabetes, but recent data shows that some medication may be putting patients in danger of developing serious side effects.
