A man who was regularly taking Actos between 2007 and 2011 to treat his Type -2 Diabetes has developed bladder cancer as a result. On January 4, 2012 he filed a lawsuit against Takeda Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Actos, for not releasing important studies and research related to the increased risk of bladder cancer for Actos users.
The FDA issued a warning claiming that the use of Actos for more than one consecutive year raises the risk of bladder cancer in individuals. The man had taken Actos every day for three years before he developed bladder cancer in June 2010. The announcement by the FDA came one year later in 2011.
The lawsuit claims that Takeda Pharmaceuticals acted negligently when dealing with the side effects of Actos and informing the public and also failing to change the medication in order to decrease the side effects. The man is seeking upwards of $50,000 in damages and an undisclosed amount of punitive damages.
