Three California couples have filed lawsuits against Takeda Pharmaceuticals, the makers of the Actos diabetes medication after they claim that the medication caused them to develop bladder cancer when taken for over a year.
The lawsuits state that the pharmaceutical company hid this risk from consumers who took the product. Plaintiffs in the lawsuit are seeking compensation for injuries sustained from the medication.
Experts estimate that nearly 5,000 claims similar to this have been filed. The Food and Drug Administration have not yet recalled the drug, but in June of 2o11, they increased the warning on the medication in order to inform users of the increased risk. A class action has recently been filed in Ontario, Canada stating the same issue.
