A class action lawsuit has been been filed against the manufacturers of the diabetes medication, Actos, claiming that they failed to disclose information that the drug could lead to bladder cancer if taken for over a year.
This class action was filed in Ontario and is lead by a woman in Toronto that was prescribed Actos to treat her Type 2 diabetes in April 20o2. The woman was later diagnosed with bladder cancer and died in April 2011 after she battled it for two years.
The family of this woman has stated that if the drug manufacturer, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, would have made the risk factors known, the woman would have sought another form of treatment. Actos is still sold in Canada, but there is now a one line statement in the monograph for the product and on Health Canada’s website about the risk.
