Takeda Pharmaceuticals Co. has announced that their profits are slipping because of the increased evidence that shows that their popular diabetes drug, Actos, is linked to bladder cancer.
The link between Actos and bladder cancer was uncovered in September 2010 when the Food and Drug Administration released a 10-year study on the drug and its effects. The study showed that there was evidence between the extended use of Actos and the link between an increased of bladder cancer.
France issued a recall of the drug in June 2011 after reviewing health insurance policies and determining that Actos users were linked to higher incidents of bladder cancer. By August 2011, the FDA issued that a warrant be put on Actos bottles that stated that the use of the product for a year may cause an increased risk to bladder cancer.
