The Three Types of Bladder Cancer
Bladder cancer, as its name implies, is a cancer that originates in the bladder. Its more obvious symptoms include painful urination, blood in the urine, and drastic changes in frequency of urination. Bladder cancer, like other cancers, is a serious illness that must be treated as soon as possible. If left untreated for too long, bladder cancer can spiral out of control to the point where the bladder must be removed. Without a bladder, there is no place for the body to store urine.

Types of Bladder Cancer
Scientists have identified three primary types of bladder cancer. Each one is named for the type of cell that goes on to become cancerous. Urothelial carcinomas are cancers that begin in the urothelium, the tissue lining in the bladder, urinary tract, and other related organs. These account for approximately 90% of all bladder cancer cases.
Squamous cell carcinoma occurs in the squamous cells, which are flat cells that might gather in the bladder after long-term infections. Squamous cell carcinomas are about 4% of bladder cancer cases. Still rarer, are adenocarcinomas, which occur in about 2% of bladder cancer cases. This is a cancer of glandular cells.
Bladder cancers can be invasive or non-invasive. Invasive cancers can move from one part of the body and go on to infect another. Non-invasive cancers stay put in one place. Nevertheless, they are cancers and as long as tumors continue to grow, they will remain dangerous.
